Official course description: This course is designed for students who are chemistry majors or non-majors who have an interest in biological science and can be used in lieu of Chem 2302 to satisfy any requirement where a second semester of organic chemistry is needed. Topics that will be covered will include conjugation, aromaticity, carbonyl chemistry including aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines, carbohydrates, amino acids and lipids. A key feature of Chem 2304 (compared with Chem 2302) will be that significantly more time will be spent on carbohydrates, amino acids and lipids including such topics as DNA sequencing, peptide synthesis and the chemistry behind ELISA methods. The organic chemistry of enzyme catalyzed reactions will also be highlighted. The greater emphasis on these biological topics means that less emphasis will be placed on multistep synthesis and more complex organic reactions compared with Chem 2302.
