Hey there! So there so the Cl- will attach to the tertiary position since the carbocation intermediate is much more stable. The heat of formation of the intermediate is lower so it is much faster to make this carbocation. The formation of the carbocation is the rate determining step so products of the faster forming carbocation will be the major product. I hope this helps! enter image description here

  • Can you try adding 1 H in the methyl indicating that it came from HCl. Reyn commented about 1 year ago
