(1) polyalkylation – the amine undergoes methylation using CH3I, forming a quaternary ammonium ion, a better leaving group than the original amine


(2) E2 elimination – the iodide ion reacts with Ag2O and H2O, forming AgI and AgOH. OH then acts as a base and performs E2, forming the less substituted alkene.
