Name each of the following compounds according to substitutive IUPAC nomenclature:

Hey everyone. So, for this problem we need to give a IUPAC name for this compound and the way we're going to do that is notice we have a ring and we also have this branch that comes off of it, so we're not going to go to the ring because that's going to be a labeled as a substituent. Notice, we also have an alcohol coming off of our chain what we're going to do is we need to find the longest straight carbon chain, we can pick one of these carbons go 1, 2 and 3 and come up with prop, right? So it's going to be some kind of propane. Now, notice that at position 2 we actually have an alcohol. Now, we couldn't give that position one because then if we went down here we'd have only get a two carbon chain and that's not the longest straight chain.

So, alcohol will have to get to position two, so we know that we can first start out by calling this a 2-pent, excuse me, not pen propanol, okay? So, 2-propanol because there's three carbons and there's an alcohol position too. Now, that whole cyclopentane is actually going to be a substituent and you may not be used to calling ring substituents but here that's actually going to apply. Now, that's also at position two, so we can call this is 2-cyclopent, but here's where it gets a little bit different, it's not going to be ane, it's going to be added as a substituent, so we add yl and take off the ane ending and we're going to move over this 2-propanol because that's going to be part of our name as well and what we do is we just indicate that this is another dash, okay? So the complete IUPAC name for this would be 2-cyclopentyl to propanol, alright? So, I hope that makes sense on how we did our numbering and how we figured out that we had to substituents coming off of 2, one ring and one alcohol group, so I hope that made sense let me know if you have any questions.
