Now, this is going to be heptanol, it gives us that our alcohol or hydroxy group is at position three and we know that hept deals with how many carbons? it's going to be seven, right? Because hex would be six carbons. So, just remember hept is dealing with seven carbons, we know that this ol have to do with an alcohol, and what do you guys think? are we ready to draw this 3-heptanol. first let's indicate that it's going to look something like this, at position 3 we're going to have an OH, okay? this is carbon three, four, five, six and seven. Now, it wants the structural formula, so we can actually represent this chain an unbranched as, let's start from the left and right CH3 next is going to be a CH2, we have CH within hydroxy, we then have CH2, CH2, CH2 and finally a CH3, okay? So this would be the correct representation of the structural formula for your three heptanol. Notice that if we were counting this, this would be our 1, 2, 3 and we keep going to get all the way up to seven, okay? So, be familiar with both and just remember that ol represents an alcohol and hept is seven carbon. So, always remember all those different, meanings hept, hex, oct and so forth.
