Question

Ramelteon is a hypnotic agent used in the treatment of insomnia:

  1. (c)  How many sp2-hybridized carbon atoms are present in this structure?

Video Transcript

Alright guys, let's get started by showing our compound, here it is and let me expand it a little. Now, remember we're looking for sp2 hybridized carbons. Now, in simple terms those are going to be carbons attached to three other things, right? So, but remember that sp2 is talking about that our carbon is going to use one of its P orbitals to make a pi bond, to make a double bond. So, where do you guys think we can easily spot some sp2 hybridized carbons? Well, probably in that ring, right? That has all those double bonds, actually every carbon in this ring it's going to be attached to three things, so they're going to all be sp2 hybridized, let's write in, all sp2, so we miss one right here, right? So that's six. Now, some of them such as here, here, we can actually draw in our hydrogens, right? And from there we should conclude that we have six so far, okay? Six carbon atoms that are sp2 but you see anywhere else in this compound where we have a pi bond to a carbon or we have a carbon that's attached to three other things, let's take a look at that carbonyl, right? Right here we have a carbon that's attached to a nitrogen, a carbon and then it's double bonded to an oxygen, so we notice using what is P orbitals to make a PI bond to that oxygen. So, here we can say that this is our seventh carbon that's sp2 hybridized, right? You can write in sp2, so we have 6 plus 1, that gives us seven sp2 hybridized carbons, okay? So, our final answer to this question is seven, so hopefully that makes sense and now let's take a look at your next question.
