Official course description: First in a sequence of courses designed to investigate what organic chemistry is and how it works, by emphasizing the relationship between structure and function of organic molecules, and the language and fundamental concepts of organic chemistry. Specific topics that are covered include the following: structure and bonding; acids and bases; functional groups; thermodynamics and kinetics of organic reactions; alkanes; stereochemistry; alkyl halides and nucleophilic substitution; elimination reactions; alcohols, ethers and epoxides; alkenes; alkynes; oxidation and reduction.
