Ionic, metal + nonmetal: metal forms only one ion: name using name of metal ion then root of nonmetal ion plus suffix -ide, CaI2 is calcium iodide; metal forms more than one ion: name using the name of metal ion followed by charge on the metal in roman numerals in parentheses then the root of the anion plus suffix -ide, FeCl3 is iron (III) chloride. Molecular, nonmetals only: name using the prefix then name of 1st element then prefix followed by root name of 2nd element with -ide suffix, P2O5 is diphosphorus pentoxide. Acids, hydrogen with one or more nonmetals: binary acids: two elements: name using prefix hydro- then base name of nonmetal plus suffix -ic then acid, HCl is hydrochloric acid.
