An unknown particle is caused to move between two electrically charged plates, as illustrated below.

A beam is emitted from a radioactive substance within a lead block. It passes through a small aperture in a vertical plate and then between two electrically charged plates (one plate is positively charged and the other plate is negatively charged). As the beam passes through the electrically charged plates the different types of rays are split. Negatively charged beta rays bend toward the positively charged plate. Gamma rays, which carry no charge, are unaffected by the charged plates and continue in a straight line. Positively charged alpha rays bend toward the negatively charged plate.
