State whether the following is ionic or molecular: (d) Ca(NO3)2
Alright guys, remember your molecular compound is when you have your non metals covalently bonded and your ionic compound is when you have a cation with an anion that sometimes happens to be a metal with a non metal, so lets take a look. We have calcium nitrate would this be a molecular or an ionic compound, well lets break it down. We know nitrate is one of our polyatomic ions so this will be NO3 minus, calcium we know has a charge of 2 plus so its in group 2A.
So as you guys can see we have a cation which is calcium and we have an anion which is going to be our nitrate, since we have a cation with an anion this will be an ionic compound. Alright guys, lets move on.
