c. C_{2}F_{3}Cl_{3}

Hey guys, in this question we're trying to find the mass of chlorine in kilograms when we have a sample of 25 kilogram C2F3CL3. So the way we're going to do this is we have our mass of given, we're going to convert from our mass of given to our moles of given using the molar mass of the entire compound. Well we have our moles of given, we could use the molar ratio for the compound to find our moles of unknown. For moles of unknown, we could find the mass of unknown using the molar mass of the atom over unknown. So let's begin.

So we have 25 kilograms of C2F3CL3. The first step is to convert kilograms to grams, because that's our mass of given. So we know that one kilogram equals 1000 grams. Kilogram goes on the bottom because we're trying to cancel out kilograms with kilograms. Now we have mass of given. So to go to a moles of given, we need to figure out the molar mass of the compound which we do by using the periodic table. So we have 2 carbons, 3 fluorines and 3 chlorines. So 2 times the molar mass of carbon is going to be 24.02, 3 times the molar mass of fluorine is going to be 57 and three times the molar mass of chlorine is going to be 106.35. So add everything together and you guys should get 187.37 grams per mole of C2F3CL3. So you can cancel out grams with grams, and that's why you put the grams on the bottom here.

So now we're at moles of given. To go to moles of unknown we use the molar ratio from the compound. So for every one mole of the compound, we have 3 moles of chlorine. As you guys could see there's a number three here which means we have three moles of chlorine. So now we can cancel out moles of the compound with moles of the compound so we're at moles of chlorine. To go from moles of chlorine to grams of chlorine we're going to have to use the molar mass of chlorine which looking at the periodic table is 35.45 grams of chlorine for every mole of chlorine so they cancel out moles with moles and finally the answer that we need needs to be in the units of kilogram so we have to convert grams to kilograms. So we know that one kilogram equals 1000 grams of chlorine. So grams of chlorine cancels out and we're left kilograms of chlorine. So multiply everything on the top and divide it by everything on the bottom and you guys should get 14.2 kilograms of chlorine and this is your final answer. Hope this helped and see you guys soon.
