Watch the video of the thermite reaction, and then choose which of the following statements are correct for the thermite reaction.
Check all that apply.
Watch the video of the thermite reaction. Thermite is a composition of metal powder and metal oxide. In this reaction, iron oxide, Fe2O3(s), and aluminum powder, Al(s), react exothermically to release a large amount of heat. Aluminum reduces the iron oxide to form metallic iron.
2Al(s) + Fe2O3 (s) → 2Fe(s) + Al2O3(s)
You may notice that potassium chlorate and a sugar mixture are treated with sulfuric acid in the beginning of the video. This is done simply to raise the temperature of the crucible enough to trigger the initial reaction between iron oxide and aluminum. Since the thermite reaction is highly exothermic, once the reaction is initiated, it is self-sustaining and continues spontaneously.
