Solution: What is the name of the covalent compound N2O5?

What is the name of the covalent compound N2O5?

We have to name the binary compound N2O5.

Binary compounds are those compounds which are made up to 2 elements.

N2O5 is made up of two elements: Carbon and chlorine.

The names of covalent compounds are written using these rules:

  • The name of the element with lower electronegativity is written first.
  • The name of the element with higher electronegativity is modified by removing the ending from the name of the element and adding “ide”. For example oxygen becomes oxide.
  • The number of atoms are expressed using Latin numbers such as mono (1), di (2), tri (3), etc.
