Solution: Use the figure to estimate the percent ionic character of the BrF bond.

Problem

Use the figure to estimate the percent ionic character of the BrF bond.

Electronegativity difference as it relates to percent ionic character. The relation is relatively linear with points (0,0), (1, 25), (2, 50) and (3, 75)., For example, compounds with an electronegativity difference below 1 have a percent ionic character below 25% (IBr, HI, ICl, HBr, HCl). Compounds with an electronegativity difference between 1.5 and 2 have values ranging from about 40% (HF), 55% (LiI), 60% (LiBr), 70% (KI), to 75% (CsI). LiCl, NaCl, and KBr all have Electronegativity differences of about 2 and a percent ionic character about 75%. CsCl and KCl both have electronegativity differences between 2 and 2.5, but CsCl has a percent ionic character below 75% and KCl has a value above 75%. Of the two ionic compounds shown with electronegativity differences at 3 or above, both have percent ionic character values above 75%.
