Official course description: This course is the first of a two-semester sequence and provides an introduction to the fundamental laws and techniques of chemistry for majors in science and engineering. Topics include: measurements and the ideal gas equation of state; atomic structure and chemical bonding; stoichiometry, chemical reactions in aqueous solution and finally thermochemistry. It consists of three components (lecture, laboratory, and workshop), which are integrated to provide a comprehensive introduction to the principles of chemistry. The laboratory component introduces students to common laboratory methods. The workshop is a peer-led, small group discussion in which you will develop your problem-solving, analytical and synthetic skills.
