Problem

Consider the phylogenetic tree below. Which of the following clade groups would be polyphyletic?

A. G, H, F, and J, K, and I

B. D, E, C, and B

C. B, C, D, E, G, H, and F

D. G, H, and F

E. J, K, and I

Solution

The phylogeny is an illustration of the evolutionary history of a group of species through the use of a cladogram. In this illustration, each branch point represents the common ancestor of the two lineages diverging from it.  We can basically assume that the more branching points that are shared between species, the more related they are.
