Problem

List 2 reasons why it is crucial that the cell membrane exhibit fluidity rather than be rigid.

Solution

Cell membranes are the semipermeable membranes of cells that basically separates the important organelles from its environment. These are made of phospholipids that form a bilayer with its hydrophobic tails hidden in the interior of the membrane. Phospholipids contain fatty acids as the nonpolar tail. These fatty acids may be saturated or unsaturated. The unsaturated fatty acids form kinks in their structure. Along with cholesterol integrated in the membrane, these kinks are what makes the cell membrane fluid.
